Why do Cambridge May Balls take place in June? In the arcane world of this ancient university, boat races called Bumps happen in May. May Balls started in the 1800s to celebrate rowing success. In the 1880s the timetable changed and the balls moved to June. But they are still called May Balls. That’s history for you.
